Killing Vox Day: Part One - What Type of Opponent?

With the 2015 Hugo Awards drawing near, I have been pondering how one might end Vox Day, the Sci-Fi community's most boogiest of boogie men. I've been reading Vox's blog Vox Populi semi-religiously since last year's Hugo kerfuffle, and if the one unforgivable sin is being boring, then the man may qualify for sainthood. I...I kind of love him now.

Before diving into the topic at hand, I want establish two things. First, "Killing Vox Day" does not mean "murdering Vox Day" or "physically harming Vox Day." As a pacifist, I do not even condone "wedgieing Vox Day." To kill Vox Day is to kill his credibility and to undermine the momentum of the Rabid Puppies.

Second, I have approached this as a purely mental exercise. This is a war game of the sort Vox himself loves so much, not an actual plan.

As in all games, we must first set the board. Let's start with the Boss Monster. Here are a few conclusions I have come to about Vox Day.

Part One: What Type of Opponent?

1). Vox Day is Honest

Whatever you think about Vox Day's opinions, you cannot deny that he states them publicly and consistently in the face of intense criticism.

Being honest does not mean telling the truth per se. It does not mean that what you say is ultimately correct. Honesty means telling the truth as you see it, based on your best understanding of the situation. Vox is acerbic, biased, and prone to fits of exaggeration, but taking these things into account, he generally says what he thinks to the best of his knowledge.

If anything, I've been stunned by how open Vox Day is about his evil, evil plans. In terms of Hugo strategy in particular, his modus operandi seems to be openly declaring his strategy, openly following through with said strategy, and then laughing at his enemies' confused responses.

This makes the move from the non-puppy camp to nuke the Hugos with "no award" votes this year particularly perplexing. Vox has openly stated that he will consider "no award" a victory. Vox's main goal is to drive everyone he doesn't like out of the party, and he's willing to shit in the punch bowl to accomplish it. Sure, he'd prefer to drink the punch, but a lesser victory is still a victory. Why should he lower himself to shit in the punch bowl when his enemies are willing to do it for him?

When Vox says he's going to do something, odds are he's going to do it. When he says he does not care about being part of the Sci-Fi in-crowd, he truly does not care. When he says his ancestry is Native American-Mexican, there is no good reason to deny it. And when he says that the Hugos and GamerGate are but single steps in his hideous plan, you had best believe that as well.

2). Vox Day is Intelligent (and Sane)

One of the things I have noticed about detractors of Vox Day is that they assume Vox is either an idiot or insane. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Vox is an extremely sharp person. He knows how to argue successfully. He can set up a consistent argument, pick out flaws in his opponent's reasoning, and generally defend intellectual positions that few other people can. Why these positions are difficult to defend hardly matters. What matters is that he has the chops to defend them.

If you need an example of this, just look at the arguments he presents in any given blog post and the bleating of his supporters in the comments. There is a world of difference. And this is why they keep coming back – because he is very, very good at arguing for them. You don't rally around a person who consistently loses.

Another good example is this interview on CSPAN where he gives a logical and eloquent argument for the right of American states to secede from the Union. You can tell that the host was expecting an easy kill against a right-wing nut job and ended up with a lively, intelligent debate.

Vox likes to credit his years of strategy gaming for these abilities (Advanced Squad Leader in particular). Personally, I like to credit years of playing Cooking Mama for my three Michelin stars and Mario marathons for my six-foot vertical jump. The more likely factor is that Vox is an avid reader - he displays a more than passing familiarity with philosophy, statistical modeling, and yes, military history and tactics (particularly Fourth Generation theory - more on this later).

Again, this is not to say that his arguments are objectively true, only that he does a good job of flustering, discrediting, and generally taking down his opponents. He can think logically, tactically, and worst of all, strategically. He does not win because of the inherent strength of his positions, but because of his technique in defending them. That is not the behavior of a drooling troglodyte or an insane person.

If we were to engage in a bit of ill-advised armchair psychology, the only disorder we could make a case for is Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Set up an authority in front of Vox, and I will give you 2 to 1 odds he will attack them. Whether the issue is Climate Change, Vaccinations, Economics, or Theology, his default position is to attack every scientist, doctor, professor, and pastor in his path. Moreover, he expends considerable amounts of time and energy gathering ammunition for these fights.

Now whether this indicates ODD or simply that Vox gets off on debate is between Vox and his therapist. What we know is that Vox resists membership in organizations with formal structures of authority and that drawing Vox into a fight is probably the easiest thing you will ever do.

3). Vox Day is a Racist?

As mentioned, I am something of a racism connoisseur. Call it a side effect of growing up in the South. So when I say this, It is with years of being on the wrong end of my neighbor's eugenics policies - but Vox Day is not a simple racist.

This may be difficult for some to grasp, but not all racism is created equal (lol). There are many shades in the racism rainbow, from Esoteric Hitlerism to the Creativity Movement to good old-fashioned White Supremacy. And those are all just varieties of White racism!

Besides, even if Vox believed in racial equality (which he does not), I'm sure there would still be someone out there accusing him of racism. By some metrics of racism, everything a human being can do, from holding a job to not holding a fart, is racist. This does not make Vox any less racist, but it does inform why less people give a fuck than you may expect.

The critical issue is not whether or not Vox is a racist, the critical issue is where he is on the racism rainbow. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “I want to be the white man's brother, not his brother-in-law,” and that sounds super-racist. [Note: Upon further research, the original context of this quote was more along the lines of "My goal is social equality, not chasing White women, you dorks." I was still quite triggered by it, and expect an apology/withdrawal from Dr. King] So what is Vox Day? MLK racist, “Grandma, we don't use that word anymore” racist, or straight up Demon-Possessed Nazi Mad Scientist racist?

We can dismiss the White Supremacy charge right off of the bat. The studies that Vox points to justify his claims that Whites are intellectually superior to Blacks and Latinos also indicate that East Asians are intellectually superior to Whites – something which Vox openly admits. And if we know anything about Vox, we know that he considers a superior intellect the essence of superiority.

Besides, Vox openly identifies as Native American-Mexican, two groups that similar studies say are generally less intelligent than Whites. So while "the red card" may work on a strategic level to shield Vox from accusations of racism, playing it is also unthinkable for a true White Supremacist. Admitting to non-White ancestry is admitting to genetic inferiority - take a look at the strange case of CsanĂ¡d Szegedi for a good example.

Perhaps the most accurate label we can attach to Vox is that of “self-segregationist.” He believes that:
  1. “Races” are legitimate, genetically determined subgroups of humanity.
  1. These subgroups have inherent genetic differences – they excel in different things, enjoy different things, and organize themselves in different ways.
  1. Human beings, at their core, prefer living among members of the same race.
As far as racism goes, this is all fairly tame (check out Savitri Devi sometime). Heck, that's more or less what the majority of humans have believed throughout the modern period.1 Once again, that does not make it any more true or any less racist, but Vox's views on race are, if anything, a bit boring.

Vox likes to say that he is not a racist but rather a "civilizationalist." He sees himself as standing up for White Christian civilization against the forces that seek to destroy it, from the schools of Frankfurt to the madrasas of Tehran.2

Race is important because he believes in a Marxist cabal that is using immigration and racial mixing to intentionally tear down the Christian civilization of Europe. He sees himself as a soldier in a war between the Kingdom of Light and the Kingdom of Darkness - race war is just a side issue.

So is Vox Day a racist? By some metrics, yes. By most metrics, yes. But it hardly matters. His supporters support him regardless. Rather, they support him all the more for not backing down to "Political Correctness." His enemies would not hate him any less if he recanted. He has everything to gain from preaching segregation and less than nothing to lose. Call it “Donald Trump Strategy” if you like, but Vox was doing it first.

4). Vox Day Doesn't Care

Why should he? Speaking out has not hurt his financial prospects in the slightest. It has propelled him to infamy, helped him launch a publishing house and revived his video game development career.

Call him a racist, throw him out of the SFWA, deny his ethnic heritage, claim his wife doesn't exist. It will all bounce off. He does not care about your opinion, my opinion, or the opinion of anyone that he does not consider an ally.

Even worse, he knows how to turn these attacks to his own advantage. Call him racist? He'll claim intellectual persecution and start a culture war. Throw him out of the SFWA? That's discriminating against Native Americans. Claim he's not really Native? Now that's racist. Boycott his works? That proves that the SJWs are scared of him. Every counter-attack becomes a flashpoint for rallying up his supporters while any silence is proof that the enemy is on the run.

Vox Day doesn't care what you say about him because he can turn most of it to his advantage. Reading Vox Populi is a Master's course on the Xanatos Gambit.

  1. Good stuff here. Only one quibble:

"And if we know anything about Vox, we know that he considers a superior intellect the essence of superiority. "

Vox Day has repeatedly stated as a Christian that a superior intellect is only a superior intellect, no more and no less. You're falling into one of his rhetorical traps if you believe he thinks the above.

  2. Hmmm. That line does lean towards taking the piss solely for the sake of taking the piss. Consider it retracted.

Still, given his character, I would guess that he would not claim to be part of a "less intelligent race" without solid evidence. Even while his clear intelligence compared to his lily-white opponents puts solid doubt to the "racial genetic intelligence mean" theory.

  3. "Vox brags about his "faceless minions" - show them that to you, they have a face. Humanize yourself to them, and them to yourself. De-escalate, then de-escalate some more. "

Seriously, you don't know the VFM at all. We don't want to be welcomed into "mainstream Sf" among the human wreckage that is the SJWs who have gradually, relentlessly pushed us out and destroyed and historically rewritten away what has made SF and Western society great... We want to watch Vox Day drink from their skulls.
"We don't care" is written upon our regimental badge for a reason, you know.

    2. I am.
I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, this war is one that I never wanted, that I feel forced into and has been about two decades in the making.
My final "last straw " moment was enduring "shirtgate". That man executed one of the greatest space engineering marvels which mankind had ever witnessed. He was a bookish nerdy sort who was an easy target and the feminist sjw thought police reduced him to a tearful apology which only served to embolden his tormentors. A scientific victory for mankind and a crowning achievement for that man's career was gleefully ruined by the gatekeepers of politically correctness.
That event got me off the sidelines and weaponized me to defend my hobbies, namely gaming and SF.

    3. I agree with that one, and it's exactly why I want to speak out against insufferable killjoys on all sides.

The last truly painful one I saw was a PhD presentation on how people of European descent enjoying playing as Nords on Skyrim was somehow racist. That's just insane.

    4. I'll second Anonymous above. I started out as a Sad puppy two years ago, simply looking to see some non identity-fiction awarded after finding out that the Hugo was an open vote award. I doled out my $40 and encountered all manner of ridiculous nastiness, completely unprovoked other than the fact that I supported 'x' instead of 'y'. Each year the nastiness accelerated until this year we had a full court press from MSM to social media bent on spreading lies and misinformation & calling us all manner of nonsense. Nevertheless before this weekend, we MIGHT have been content to play nice (that's a huge might but we were holding our hand to see what the outcome was) and just vote as normal next year. After this weekend? The intent is to destroy the other side. Completely, comprehensively, and unconditionally. We will have people fired, jobs lost, and leftist asshole 'asterisk' trophies burned in piles. There is no solution in a war that was forced upon us but to utterly defeat the enemy that has attacked, and make no mistake, they attacked us first. We attempted reason, and were given sphincter trophies and openly mocked. We will respond in kind. Frankly it's laughable that morons like Scalzi think the war is over. This is but the first battle, and we've successfully gotten them to blow up their own citadel with little effort. Why would we stop now?

    5. P.S. I'd note, that initially I was a potential ally. I honestly had no dog in the fight other than noticing that in the last 30 years or so the Hugo has become a mark of 'what to avoid' in SciFi instead of what to buy. TBH I can't remember the last time I bought a book that had 'Hugo Award Winner' on the cover, but its been a decade at least (Of course, I usually buy e-books these days so who knows -- I don't much give a crap about covers, nor color of author, nor gender of author nor anything else other than 'good book?

At this point the creepoids at worldcon couldn't PAY me to be a part of their kool klub. I simply have no desire to mingle with a bunch of creepy 12 year old acting adolescent children who are actually old enough to be my parents & who obviously don't want any newcomers.

    2. And gain a lot of worthy friends too. Might be a good trade off.

The only thing passing for a sales pitch I'll offer is by and large the people on our team despite the situation, Despite being in the midst of war we didn't want and very possibly a civilizational collapse are immeasurably happier and more at peace than those on the Left.

What I've noticed in the years I've dealt with Leftists is that contentment seems elusive to them and while life isn't always happy nor is it meant to be, it can be good and content. They always seemed afflicted to me.

However all that aside, you've earned yourself a new reader. Well done.

    3. Seconded. That's his best stuff, although I think that *Somewither* has been the most fun read for me, as a conservative convert to Catholicism, which religion is not explicitly addressed in the other two books/series, despite Wright's own deep Catholic faith. *Count to Infinity* just seems to drag at times, although I have faithfully followed through so far for love of both the author and the characters.

    1. Thanks! I find it interesting that the Rabids have been consistently calling this year a scouting party, well before the actual Hugos. If the Rabids had been claiming 2015 was full-on war before the Hugos and then switching gears afterwards, I would have more faith in the File 770 crowd's take on it.

Again, this is why I'm writing this. Vox is honest, and calls his shots. I understand the value of propaganda (Puppies defeated! Puppies defeated!) but I also don't see much...well, non-propaganda.

  9. Rev, you are an honest man and a gentleman. If more people on the "liberal side" were like you, Vox Day would not exist and Theodore Beale would be a contented SFWA member.

This is something I've said elsewhere but bears repeating: snark and insults don't win hearts and minds. A particularly cutting remark is great for rallying one's own supporters and impressing people you already agree with, but it doesn't convince your enemies of anything other than that you consider them enemies. In a culture war nobody dies, so every "victory" simply makes one's enemies more angry and determined.

You are attempting to understand Vox and the Sad Puppies contingent, rather than thinking of creative insults to call them. We (the science fiction fan community) need more of this.

In the meantime, you spend many words considering whether Vox is "racist" or not. Here is what he has written on the Vox Populi blog, right out there in the public:

I assert that an unborn female black child with a missing chromosome and an inclination to homosexuality is equal in human value and human dignity and unalienable, God-given rights to a straight white male in the prime of his life and a +4 SD IQ.

Racist? This minion is merely reporting. You decide.

    1. That statement is not racist in any way, shape, or form. It is, in fact, more defensive of the basic human rights of the "party of the first part" that many from the Left - abortion is one of the issues where I do fall on the Right's way of thinking.

It's also a statement calculated to shield Vox from charges of racism by changing the argument to one about abortion. It does not override the other public statements made by Vox about race on his blog.

But, anyway, thanks! I'll keep speaking the truth as I see it if you do the same!

    2. Words are neither deeds nor incantations. If they were, then that statement might 'unracist' someone the same way that earlier utterances may have 'racisted' them.

In this blighted age one's utterances are even less useful as evidence than in the last. If there was ever a legal case revolving around the false confession, then 99% of what passes for racism in this country & this century is worthless.

      Delete
    3. If the abortion issue is distracting, then try it with "newborn" substituted for "unborn". That doesn't change the argument to one about abortion. Does the statement seem inconsistent with other Vox's statements on race?

  11. I'm looking forward to the rest of your analysis of VD. I've enjoyed a couple of his blogs for years and would say that he can almost out Trump, Trump. The only reason that I think VD is second to Trump is because Trump has millions to spend and a larger following of minions. That's not to say that VD will not surpass him sometime soon. If VD ran for president his Evil League of Evil would expand tremendously and he'd probably soon rule the world.

  14. I don't think you've shown Vox Day to be a racist, above. Which of the three points constitutes racism in your opinion? Point 3 might be racist if it constituted an *ought*. But, as a long-time follower of Day, I can tell you, it isn't an *ought* for Day, but a historically observed *is*. Do you deny that throughout History, human beings have prefered living among members of the same race? Or did you explicitly demonstrate Vox Day's racism elsewhere?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First, let's get one thing out on the table: by some contemporary definitions of "racism," pretty much everyone is a racist. We will not be using those definitions.

Second, throughout most of history, human beings have been limited in their movements by both mobility (i.e., it's hard to walk to China from Portugal. Hell, it's hard to walk from West Portugal to Spain), the lawlessness of the countryside, and laws preventing human movement. A 14th century serf was literally legally bound to remain on their Lord's property, so they weren't going to visit Africa even if they wanted to.

However, what we see is, when mobility and laws permit the movement of people, people like to travel. Once Nebuchadnezzar is able to enforce peace in his kingdom, trade flourishes. The Silk Road leads Africans, Europeans, Jews, Arabians, and so on to China, often to settle there for centuries. 14th century serfs never lead their property, but 14th century kings and queens travel great distances to form marriage alliances.

Racial identities are always formed in reference to outsiders. 14th century kings were not concerned with the future of the "White race," they were concerned with the future of their people - their kingdom. It was not until the Age of Sail and the Transatlantic slave trade that we start to see a true concept of the "White race" emerge, and even then, there were still hierarchies within the White race.

Even as recently as WWII, Aryans were considered superior to other Whites such as Anglo-Saxons, Franks, and Slavs. The idea that America was founded as a "White nation" is an anachronism. America was founded as an Anglo-Saxon nation, with a few Anglicized Gaelics and others running around.

So, my stance is that humans have lived among members of the same extended family, then tribe, then Kingdom, then nation throughout history. This was not due to preference so much as the need to defend property from outsiders (of the same race or not), the lawlessness of the countryside, and lack of mobility technology.

So, Vox's claim that human beings prefer living among members of the same race throughout history fails to adequately define race and improperly applies motive to historically homogenous communities when alternate explanations for self-segregation exist.

  15. Vox Day has admitted to having been sexually assaulted by an older woman as a teenager on his blog: http://alphagameplan.blogspot.com/2014/09/teach-women-not-to-rape.html Rape Trauma Syndrome is a fairly easy explanation for a lot of his observed behavior.

He is combative, he has developed his own odd (even for the PUA bloggers) ideas about human sexuality; the 'sociosexual hierarchy' he continuously cites is self-serving to his self-identified social role as a "sigma", and hypervigilance, flight (to Europe!), overemphasis on the importance of his martial skills (look at how often he describes his Karate experience) and obsession with military matters (through Mil-SF and association with noted military pundits like Van Creveld and Lind), and I'm sure you can find more--all of these things are entirely consistent with Rape Trauma Syndrome. The reason this is unrecognized is because Vox Day is a very intelligent male with a healthy amount of testosterone, rather than a female of typical intelligence, so things look a little different than an observer might expect.

As he is a male victim in a culture that he perceives (correctly, I might add) as not respecting or acknowledge his victimhood, he is unlikely to seek help, and if he does seek help, he is very unlikely to find it. If he should find someone emotionally equipped to help, this may not be enough, as you point out, Vox is both smart and combative, which means that attempts to help him will likely provoke intellectual 'combat', and such combat once started will be difficult. A smart person's denials, rationalizations, and arguments will be very difficult to pick apart for someone who is not as mentally agile. If he responds to this line of analysis at all, which he probably won't if it isn't picked up, I expect his response to be effective at avoiding reputational costs to himself among his followers, though I do not know what it will look like.

I suppose that one particularly ugly way to use this line of argument is that by using his own metrics, he can be classified as the same sort of damaged person he accuses his opponents of being member of a wronged minority, with residual effects of sexual trauma that have had long term effects on his life. He rejects his SJW identity, is unwelcome in the SJW community due to cultural factors (his gender), and yet manages to rationalize embracing SJW tactics without acknowledging that maybe their appeal to him comes from the same origin as it does for the "emotionally damaged" SJWs he maligns.

    TLDR:

This year, a Mestizo with Rape Trauma Syndrome rallied a mob and ran roughshod over a bunch of white males (Scalzi, GRRM, PNH, etc) trying to guard the entrenched culture of a particular literary niche. Though comparisons to Rigoberta Menchu could probably be made here, it is to Vox's credit that unlike Menchu, he correctly labels his works of fiction as such.
